I have a Canon EOS 40D EF-S17-85mmf4-5.6 IS USM camera. What’s the best settings to take indoor basketball pic?
The camera takes great outdoor shots but with the limited lighting in indoor stadiums the action shots come out blurry. I would love to invest in a better lens but for now I have to make do with what I’ve got! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I suggest you put the camera on aperture priority mode (AV). Set your aperture to the largest opening (smallest number). Then crank your ISO up to 1600 or 3200. This will give you the fastest shutter speeds. In order to freeze action you will need a shutter speed of at least 1/250th of a second. If your shutter speeds are still under 1/250 then you will have to buy a faster lens.
Shooting indoor sports can be very difficult especially at school gyms. The professional stadiums are much better lit though still pretty poor.
As it appears that you are pretty close to the action from the lens you have I suggest you pick up a 50mm F1.8 ($90). This is a fast very sharp lens. It will give you more than 3 stops of additional aperture enabling much faster shutter speeds. For the money you can’t beat it. It is also a good lens for portraits.
I usually use a 50mm F1.4 when shooting my sons basketball games. The 50mm F1.4 is about $400. It is better built but and the aperture is a little wider but the F1.8 version will work out fine.
