My digital camera provides manual control over shutter speed and aperture, but why give me exposure control?
I like the idea of having control over my shutter speed and aperture as individual settings, but my camera also offers an “exposure” feature that basically adjust the F/stop by thirds.
If I already have manual control over my aperture why would I want a third control that essentially does the same thing? Is it just because it offers adjustments by increments of a thrid of an F/Stop?
If so, why wouldn’t they just make the aperture control more detailed in it’s increments?
Maybe you misworded your question, and so I consider that possibility just in case…
If you’re wondering why give exposure control (this is not f/stop, but just overall exposure, like +0.3, +0.7, +1.0, -1.0, etc), when you have full manual control, here’s the reason.
Aperture and shutter speed control will make you adjust exposure any way you want. You can make an image brighter, less brighter, or you can change settings to give more depth of field, or faster/slower shutter speeds without changing the brightness (by adjusting shutter speed and aperture in equal and opposite directions).
But say you don’t care exactly what aperture or shutter speed you’re taking it at. Say you’re on automatic (program) mode, you shoot a picture and see it is too dark,
Rather than think about if you should change the aperture, change ths shutter, and in what direction, cameras allow you to quickly say, well, just give me +1.0 compensation.
The camera will adjust the shutter or aperture on its own, allowing you not to worry about it, just get the result you want.
