Camera Aperture Depth Of Field

camera aperture depth of field
Apperture is really depth of field? ?

Hi I hope iv cracked this so aperture is really depth of field so if I have a high depth of field means more around a subject will be in focus. Also if I have the camera set on aperture it’s really doing is the amount that’s in focus in the picture I really hope I have getting this lol

The aperture or lens opening controls both the amount of light streaming in through the lens. Plus that setting controls the depth of field or how much is in focus in front of and behind of..where you focused to create image.

Here is how it works. Like if you focus on a persons face, on the nearest eye and take a pic.
Lens wide open. Allows the most amount of light to stream into camera and gives you almost no depth of field. So the eye will be in focus and the rest of the person’s face will be in more blurred the farther you go from the eye.
With lens closed down. Allows less light to stream into camera and gives more depth of field. The more you close the lens down, the less light goes into the camera but depth of field increases.

Depth of field extends roughly 1/3 closer to you from subject and 2/3 away from subject.

On film cameras, focus on the subject. Set exposure, the aperture, then shutter speed to correctly expose film.
Then look at the lens. Look at the distance subject is focused on. Then look at the aperture ring which has that aperture number on both sides of where you focused on. Read the near and far numbers (in feet or meters) and that will give you an idea of what will be in focus for the pic you want to take.

With a film camera set on aperture priority, you are in essence preferring what is in focus in the image you wish to create. And you still have to do your part in making sure the aperture you choose is in your camera’s correct exposure range with the film in your camera. Look at the exposure indicator needle thingy first to see if a correct exposure is possible, the needle will be either out of or inside indicator. Set aperture/shutter combination to your liking or within your camera’s capabilities. You may have to switch to another film to take the pic with aperture’s dof you are liking so much.

Early photography jargon. You can create an image with less or greater depth of field.

I’ll not comment on digital cameras as I have no experience with them.
