If I use Lomography brand film in my regular 35mm camera will I get similar effects?
I have a Pentax K1000, and I didn’t feel like buying another camera if I could have similar effects using my own if I buy lomography film. I’d appreciate any advice. Thanks!
Kristen, Lomography brand film is, in most cases, nothing more than other brands of film that have been repackaged. Lomo red scale film, for example, is nothing more than probably Fuji Superia wound around in the canister inside out so you are shooting through it backwards to make the images red with the base layer of the film. Their XPRO films are just some other brand of slide film that are meant to be cross processed in c41 chemicals.
So if you use this film, you are just paying extra for films you could get elsewhere if you did some more research on various types of film.
What camera you expose any particular type off film in doesn’t matter. What matters is the quality of the lens and the type of film and processing.
However, with Lomo cameras, they are made poorly and leak light, overlap frames and other things the K1000 was built to NOT do. If you want leaking light, extreme fisheyes and exposed sprocket areas, yes, buying a Lomo camera is a good option, however, all these effects can be done in any other brand camera if you simply understand the processes behind them. You can get a fisheye lens for your K1000 and if you want to leak light, simply open the back and close it very quickly between shots.
It would be best if you chose a particular effect and studied how it is created than to expect to simply buy a product to do it for you. Photography is all about understanding how images can be made, unfortunately, many of us get sidetracked by buying things instead of doing the reading and experimenting because there are soo many neat products out there! So if you don’t know what slide film and cross processing is or a light leak, there is where you should begin with your reading before buying.
At any rate, feel free to write me with any questions. Good luck!

Cloverfield $3.43 One of the first things a viewer notices about Cloverfield is that it doesn’t play by ordinary storytelling rules, making this intriguing horror film as much a novelty as an event. Told from the vertiginous point-of-view of a camcorder-wielding group of friends, Cloverfield begins like a primetime television soap opera about young Manhattanites coping with changes in their personal lives. Amarcord (The Criterion Collection) $21.00 From moment to moment and shot by shot, Amarcord delivers more sheer pleasure than any other Federico Fellini movie. That’s not to say it’s his greatest film, or that anything in it rivals the emotional, lyrical, or metaphysical wallop of the finest passages in Nights of Cabiria, 8 1/2, La Strada, or even La Dolce Vita, the big early-’60s crossover hit that made the director king of the internatio… |
