whats my lens and angle of view?
hi i have a
2.8/5.6mm lens
5.6mm corresponds with a 35mm frame
a 4.8mm by 3.6mm sensor (“1/3″).
i’d like to know if its wide or normal or tele and the degree of angle of view.?
thats the first question.
2nd is a e-mailed a guy (asking about mycamera) and i asked that the smaller a sensor is the more telephoto then camera is, he replied:
“if the lens’s focal length were truly 35mm, then it would be a telephoto. But it’s actually a lot shorter”—
i dont understand this cos the lens for my sensor should be bigger to make it tele NOT smaller as he said, for example if they r 35mm on my sesnor is should be wide, if they r 80mm it is tele.
where as he is syaing the shorter.
can someone please explain??
First question – First you need to appreciate that while the focal length of a lens is constant the angle of view depends on the film or sensor size.
So what they mean by 5.6mm corresponds with a 35mm frame is that your 5.6mm lens would be the equivalent of a 35mm lens on a 35mm film camera. Because your sensor is so much smaller than the 36x24mm format of 35mm film the 5.6mm lens is effectively multiplied up to the 35mm lens equivalent.
The average angle of view of a 35mm lens on a 35mm film camera is 63 degrees diagonal, 40 degrees vertical and 54 degrees horizontal.
Second question – The e-mail guy seems to be saying that if the lens on your camera was actually 35mm focal length and not 5.6mm then it would be a telephoto lens on your camera but seeing how it isn’t he’s just confusing things for no reason.
All that matters is that you do have a 5.6mm lens with an angle of view similar to that of a 35mm lens on a 35mm film camera, this would be usually be regarded as wide angle, the 50mm lens being the accepted “normal” lens for 35mm cameras.
