how can i acheive better photographs with my camera like these? is a lens hood necesary?

i want to know how this photographer got that nice vignette at the edges, and i was wondering if he or she got this amazing image quality by using a lens hood?
The first shot is just using the camera and its light meter to determine the best exposure. Since the sun is to the left side of the photographer, a lens shade can prevent flare which would possibly cause lower contrast in the shot if not used
The second shot is overexposed about 2/3rds of a stop. See how the child’s cheek is washed out and blends with the overexposed background? Again, no special technique was used in particular.
