What is a lens hood and lens adapter ring is used?

I just bought a Sony Cyber-shot 9.1 megapixel digital camera comes with a lens hood and lens adapter ring that is supposed to hook onto the lens. What is the purpose of these?

Parasol objective is to minimize glare from ambient light from what I understand … lens adapter ring? perhaps additional targets … I have a Canon Powershot S3 IS, and has the ring thing too. I understand this is to attach the zoom lens to give extra special, special features, etc would have to consult the manufacturer's website to see over the lens to work for it though. see sonystyle.com and look at their section of cameras. may have additional specific goals for the camera, unless you can take the A Minolta-mount lenses as the series of Sony Alpha DSLR cameras.
