About ISO in cameras?
Hi all, Can someone explain to me in detail when i would use a very high ISO in the camera? For i know, if you want a cleaner photo to use ISO 100 or 200,and for fast movement ISO 500 up to about 1600 or near that. However above that you get noise “grain”, so when and where would you use ISO setting like 3200 or 4000, 8000 and greater ?. I see some cameras have an astonishing like 5200 or so ISO. As mentioned, could you give me an idea on when you would use such high ISO’s etc…., and give some examples, thanks all for your time.
Each sensor has one ISO at which it has the best image quality. For example, on my old camera it was ISO 100. On my current camera it’s ISO 200
As you increase ISO, noise increases, especially in the shadows.
The ideal way to stop motion and maintain image quality is off-camera flash with ISO ~100 to ~200.
If you are not using flash, you may have to run some test to find out what produces the best images.
Your lens is probably sharpest at f4 to f5.6
The slowest acceptable shutter speed depends on:
lens length
built-in image stabilization
camera movement (hand-held vs tripod)
direction of motion (parallel to lens axis or perpendicular to lens axis)
subject speed
amount of image enlargement (web image vs 40″ x 60″)
distance of viewer from image.
I have produced some calendars, printed 12″ x 16″, all shot with Nikon D300, 80-200mm 2.8, image-stabilized. I found that 1/125 was about the slowest I could hand-hold (all were done hand held). And, I tried to shoot at f2.8 to f4. As I recall, I didn’t go to an ISO higher than 600.
When we chose pictures for publication, we always looked at image sharpness, NOT at noise, as the main technical concern.
When I am photographing weddings, noise is not a concern, and with my camera I can shoot at ISO 1600 and get acceptable images. But only low-light images, i.e., images where the emotional content is more important than clean shadows.
Formal wedding photos I try to keep my ISO below 600, because in formals it is very important that we see the details – the details are more important than the emotional content.
For this reason, having flashes capable of lighting a group of 75 people, ISO 400, f5.6 is essential.
