Tracking shot in film?
Can tracking occur from side to side, like a right/left track, or is it only track in/out?
and what about if it’s a handheld camera? does panning/tilting/tracking apply in terms of writing out directions?
If you are writing out directions it DEFINITELY APPLIES…:)
Be as clear to your camera op as possible. Talk about the style you want. Tell them how you plan to edit the footage so that they have continuity in mind, etc, etc….
When you physically move the camera along sideways, you are tracking.
When you physically move the camera forward or back, you dolly. (But some people use track for either movement)
Standing still, raising or lowering the camera is called pedestalling or craning.
Standing still, rotaing the camera from side to side is panning,
Standing still, rotating the camera up or down is tilting,
Zooming we know.
When the camera op walks along to follow a character or an event, it’s following.
