Problems to Expect After Dropped Camera?
I was on-scene at a fire in a local restaurant, with my camera on a tripod with a quick release plate.
An incompetent neighbor recognized me, and in the middle of my filming asked “what does this do”, and pulled my quick release lever.
The camera dropped about 4 feet and hit the grass just past a sidewalk. After picking it up, it took about 15 seconds to get into focus via autofocus again, but then focused normally.
I’ve tested focus, zoom, white balance, recording and everything else I could think of. No scratches to the lens for sure as I had a protector on.
From what I can tell, there’s no damage at all, even cosmetically it is unscratched.
My question is could I experience problems in the future? A slow decline of quality or anything along those lines? Because if so I’d like to go to small-claims court as soon as possible (as my neighbor refuses to pay for their mistake willingly).

I’d say if you’ve tested everything, you’d probably have seen an issue already if there was one. Does a manual focus hold all the way through a zoom? Do all switches for filters, etc., work normally? Once you get past all the tests you can think of, I figure it would be very difficult to attribute any possible future problems directly to this incident – very difficult to prove. One thing you might do is get the camera to the manufacturer or one of their authorized service centers, run diagnostics, and see what they say – do they advise any action? Repair? Replacement? How that translates legally, I have no idea, and I’m not going to even venture a guess.
