What kind of SD card (speed rating) should I buy?
I’m getting a Canon SD1200 ( http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=ModelTechSpecsTabAct&fcategoryid=145&modelid=18144 ) to replace my 5-year-old sub-compact digicam that died. My old camera used Compact Flash (I splurged on a 256 MB card! hah), and I’ve never owned anything else that took an SD card.
My question is mostly about SD card speed ratings. With a camera of this (not terribly high) caliber, would I ever run into a need for more than Class 2 speed? My boyfriend has a Class 6 SD card in his DSLR that he’s very happy with, but it was pricey and I’m assuming a point-and-shoot wouldn’t be able to take pictures fast enough to justify a card with that high of a write-speed. Any read speed is probably going to be better than what I’m used to from my old camera.
I’m also willing to hear recommendations/criticisms on specific brands.
Most P&S cameras will support Class 4 cards. Buying a class 6 if your camera does not support them, is a waste of money. Under most condidtions, Class 6 is most important if you shoot a lot of video and filling the whole card before you stop shooting (not a very good way to shoot video unless you don’t mind spending hours editing the video later)
Check with Canon (800.OK-CANON) and see what class your SD1200 supports.
