I need help with low light photography camera settings. I am using a Canon 20D with an EF 70-200L IS USM?
The low light scenario is shooting at an indoor gym for basketball games. I don’t have an external flash and really would prefer not to shoot with one if possible so I’m not blinding the players.

I forgot to meantion my lense has an F/Stops of 2.8.
Also i wanted to ask what White balance I should use with no external flash shootin in an indoor gym.
If I use the continuous shooting mode (burst) what AF mode would you recommend: one shot, AI focus or AI Servo?
Set your camera to Shutter Priority (S)
Set your ISO to 1600, 3200
Set the shutter speed to 1/200. Frame the picture and press the shutter release halfway.
Look in the viewfinder or on the LCD, and the camera will show you the aperature setting.
If the aperature setting is blinking, that means that the camera can’t open the aperature enough to take the picture at 1/200. (The camera will still take the picture, but it will be too dark)
If this happens, reduce shutter speed to 1/100, and try again.
When you see that the aperature setting isn’t blinking anymore, that means that the camera is ready to take the picture (and it won’t be too dark)
Keep in mind the following: The higher the ISO setting, the more “grain” you will see in your photographs. But a high ISO setting is required for low light settings, because it makes the CCD’s (or film) more responsive to the light which enters the lens.
If your shutter speed falls much below 1/100, you risk getting blurry pictures, because the players in the game are moving too much during the time that your shutter is open.
If you can reduce the ISO to 800, and still get the Shutter speed that you’re looking for, you will get less grainy pictures, and better color representation.
In general, lenses with aLow aperature number, will take better pictures in low light settings.
Canon for example makes the 70-200 lens in F4, and F2.8.
The F2.8 is more expensive, but it is much better for low light situations, because the aperature will open wider, letting in more light…
