What camera settings would you suggest for a portrait/ abstract photoshoot?

I have a Canon Rebel T1i (new purchase) and a canon EFS 18-55mm lense. What setting(s) would you sugggest for an outdoor abstract portrait photoshoot?
Read the manual and Canon’s website. Put it in Creative Auto mode, this allows you to learn from the camera. This will help too http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/ .
