Technically, did I run a red light?
This was on a highway–and as bountiful as the “resources” on the Internet are, they haven’t answered my question:
I stopped in the middle of a highway intersection (or so I think, but my entire car was past the white pedestrian line) at a red light. And, not knowing whether to reverse or go because honestly they don’t teach you in driving school–Out of courtesy I crossed the intersection, none of the other cars were going and they didn’t go until I did. The only reason I went was because I didn’t want to block traffic, and my only experience of this happening with someone else was with my school bus driver–she braked hard and stopped in the middle of the intersection, like me, and just drove on because she was blocking other buses.
I know Houston turned on their red light cameras last month or so but I’m not sure if they’ve got a photo of me “running” (or whatever it’s called) the light.
If the car was already in the intersection (wheels past the stop line) in most states it would not be considered running a red light to proceed through the intersection (if it can be done safely).
The Texas drivers handbook states you may not enter an intersection on red (but with your wheels past the pedestrian line your car had entered the intersection).
The Texas handbook also states that cars may proceed on green only after yielding right of way to cars already in the intersection.
See chapter 5 of the Texas handbook.
There are states where you may not enter an intersection until you can safely clear the intersection by the way.
