How do you take a photograph with a blurred background, and what kind of camera should I use?
I want to get into photography. I would love to be able to do it professionally someday, but right now I just want to learn more about it. I am looking into getting a new camera, and I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations. I can afford up to about $500.00. I was thinking about the Canon Power Shot SX12IS or the SX20IS. Does anyone know anything about these camera’s? I want a camera where I can take pictures with a blurred background. I don’t know how to do that, so I don’t really know what to look for while buying a camera. Also, I know many professional photographers spend thousands of dollars on a camera, but do some get by with cheaper cameras? Thanks!
For about $550 you can get the Nikon D3000 with the kit lens from B&H Photo. They show the older D40 as out of stock, but you might still find one for a bit less if you look around. You might want to check out Canon, Olympus and Sony’s entry level dSLR as well. Or try KEH.com, Craigslist or ebay for used digital or film SLRs.
It is much harder to get shallow DOF (blurred background) with a P&S, even an advanced “bridge” camera because the sensor is much smaller and the lens is more wide angle. Here is my favorite link for new photographers:
