How do I articulate my photo vision when I am not a photographer?
I am trying to hire a photographer for my wedding and some want me to tell them what I want – my “photography vision.” Not being a photographer myself I am sure there are specific words a pro would try to pick out of my description of what I like about their portfolio so they can get an idea of what to do for my session. I want to say “I want the photos fun, warm, and interesting, but not too artsy or dramatic. I like candid/spontaneous shots, but don’t want it to look like the six year old ring bearer was handling the camera.” Should I just say it like that or is there a photographer out there that has a suggestion? Maybe if I point out the specific photos from their portfolio that I like and why? That seems a bit much for an initial conversation discussing prices, but some prefer to provide a quote after knowing my “photo vision.”
HELP. Please?
What you said sounds fine. A good photographer will be able to ask questions if there is any confusion as to what you are looking for. Make sure that the portfolio has the look or style that you are wanting. Feel free to point out specific photos to the photographer that you like the best, and perhaps try to explain what you like about them.
If they show you images that look different from what you are wanting, but tell you that they can do what you are asking, keep looking. Find someone with a proven track record of the types of images you want.
Good luck!
