Can I buy camera parts to fix a camera on my own?
I am buying a camera that has a broken reflex mirror really cheap for the lense. I was wondering if it would be possible for me to buy this part and try to fix it? I can’t seem to find the parts for sale anywhere… Just thought I would try. The deal was good for the lense, so if I messed the camera up, it wouldn’t be a big problem. It is a Canon Rebel XT.
Yeah, no fun! But really, I appreciate the answers! Like I said, I am really buying it for the lense I want, so if I mess it up or experiment with a mirror, I will be no worse off. Will cost more to have it professionally repaired than it did to buy it. Only paying $100 for it and like I said, it is worth that for the lense I need. Thanks guys! If you are just playing (ahem), and it’s just the actual mirror, why not find a small mirror and cut it to size with a glass cutter? It’s not part of the precision optics…in fact it gets lifted out of the light path when you take a picture.

The (front silvered!) mirror might be transferable and keep the autofocus working. There’s a half-silvered area of the mirror that allows light through to the autofocus sensor below.
