SD 800 or SD 850?
I am ready to buy a digital camera and have read consumer reports about Canon’s SD800 and have decided to go with this one. The SD850 is now out and I’m not sure which to buy now because the SD850 is supposed to replace the 800, but I can’t read any consumer reports reviews because it just came out. Is the 850 much different.. better/worse?
Can someone also explain the whole angle thing. I understand the smaller the number explains capturing more zoomed out and the higher number captures more zoomed in. But doesn’t the optical and digital zoom explain this? Please explain what the numbers (28mm for example) mean.
Also, another question for anyone up to it. Do you have to turn the wide angle on? Many people complain about the quality of the edges of the pictures with the wide angle but is it always on or is it an option you can turn on/off. Thanks
The SD850-IS is actually not supposed to replace the SD800-IS. It replaces the SD700-IS, which is now discontinued. Every feature is the same, except for the pixel count and image processor. The SD800-IS is not leaving the market now.
You have to decide between only two things, as the cameras are quite similar. The SD800-IS goes to a wide angle equivalent of 28 mm, but stops at 105 mm on the long end. The SD850-IS starts at 35 mm, but goes all the way to 140 mm. There is not a HUGE difference between 28 mm and 35 mm (IMHO – some love it), but there is quite a difference between 105 mm and 140 mm. Besides that, the SD800-IS is known to be kind of soft on the wide end of the lens. The reviews say, “there is a slight, but noticeable drop off in sharpness towards the edges and corners in some circumstances.”

dpreview does not have the SD850-IS reviewed yet, so see:

Personally, I would choose the SD850-IS in a heartbeat, but I usually value more zoom on the telephoto end over wide angle capability. To me, this is the only real world difference in these cameras. Smallbluepickles must be a wide angle kind of guy. Does this mean he has a more worldly view and I am narrowly focused???
