Question about taking photos at night with Nikon or other brand Digital SLR camera?
How do you take a pic of the moon and stars. I know I need a tripod but what settings do I use for shutter speed and aperture(I assume that would be the F Stop). I tried on auto and of course the moon was one big bright light with no definition. How would I do it?
I have a Nikon D60
The lens is a 18-55 VR & AF-S DX 55-200mm F/3.5-5.6G VR
The moon is a sunlit object and should be photographed the same way you’d photograph any other sunlit object. You can use the “Sunny 16 Rule” which states: “On a sunny day, set your aperture to f16 and your shutter speed to 1/ISO.”
So place your camera on a tripod, set your camera to Manual, use your 55-200mm lens at 200mm and try an exposure at f16 with your shutter speed set to whatever ISO you’ve selected. ISO 100 will give you better results. f16 @ 1/100 sec.
A 200mm lens is really a little short for good moon pictures. Unless you want to buy a longer lens, you might consider a 2x Teleconverter. Nikon offers the AF-S TC-20E II for around $450.00 or you can buy the Tamron AF 2X SP Nikon Mount Teleconverter for around $250.00. Kenko offers their AF 2X DG Pro Teleconverter in a Nikon mount for around $250.00. However, you do lose 2 stops with a 2X teleconverter so you’d need to use f8 to get the same effect as you’d get at f16 without the teleconverter.
