10pts to best answer! What is the secret to taking excellent quality photos with digital SLR cameras?
I want to get the clearest sharpest photographs I can from my camera. I have tried messing around with the settings but just can’t seem to get the picture quality I desire. Could someone help explain to me how I can get this? Thanks!

From what you say in your question it sounds like you have focus/ camera shake issues. You can eliminate camera shake in a number of ways. If using a tripod is out of the question, there are some good tips here. http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/how-to-avoid-camera-shake/
also, try using things like benches, fences etc for support.
If you have the option of interchangeable lenses, maybe it’s worth considering investing in a VR (Vibration Reduction) lens.
Also bare in mind that a longer lens requires a faster shutter speed for hand holding.
As you don’t have to worry about wasting film, set to full manual and take lots of test shots and see what shutter speeds you need with different lenses, then set that as the minimum shutter speed to use on your program settings
(and watch your focusing.)
