Canon EOS mark ii 5D vs. regular HD camcorder for videos?
Hello, let me make this quick and to the point. I have around 3k. I’m purchasing a camera and a camcorder. I am primarily a photographer, but I really would like to be able to take some stunning and high quality video.
My question is….do I get a nikon D300 w/lenses for around 2300 and just pick up a normal HD camcorder for around 700….
Or do I just get the Canon EOS mark ii 5d so i can use that for both video and photography.
It seems like the video abilities of the mark ii are better than those of your typical 700 dollar HD camcorders…at least from what I have seen samples wise, and on youtube HD.
Still cameras that produce video are all compromises and just features to try to help sell more cameras.
Trying to compare the results from what you see on YouTube is not giving the excellent HD camcorders a fair look. If you look at the video file requirements, you will see that any image uploaded has been reduced in quality from whatever the original video is and then there is also the issue of the skills of the shooter who posts such videos.
It is very important to understand that there really are some huge differences between a proper still DSLR and camcorder. They are very different designs and the work-flow is also very different as well.
While the two DSLR’s that do include some video are both excellent cameras for shooting still images and their ability to produce professional quality still images, their video capabilities are not on par with even $350 camcorders.
Trying to add video to a still camera is much like trying to include four wheel drive option to a Corvette or other sports car … and then expect to be able to go off-road with it some weekends and race it as a production sports car on an SCCA track on other weekends.
You will be much happier with something like a Sony DCR-HC62 mimi-DV(under $300) or even a Sony DCR-SR87 HDD camcorder.
The Sony HD camcorders actually costs more like $750 the. HDR-XR100. The JVC GZ-MG365B at $600 or Panasonic HDC-HS100K $700 (this would be my choice) or Canon VIXIA HG10 HD, $750
A Nikon D300 in combination with one of the above cameras will serve you much better than buying a compromise, no matter how much you pay.
