How to create good light graffiti using a Nikon d40?
So I know that I’m supposed to make the exposure last as long as I can and lower the aperture and ISO, but how exactly do I do this? I just got my D40 two weeks ago, and I still don’t know exactly how everything works. (I bought it used and it didn’t come with a manual.) When I messed around a bit and found the ISO, the lowest it would go was 200, and Auto, when I heard that a good ISO for light graffiti was 100. and what about aperture and exposure? how do i change that? and settings? do i use auto, or night scene?
i have the tripod and lights, now all i need is how to actual SET my camera this way. Can anybody help with that?

David is pretty much spot on, just a couple things you should know.
To adjust your shutter in Manual mode, simply slide the dial on the back to the left. Left = slower speed, right = faster speed. Twist it all the way to the left till it says Bulb. If you don’t have the wireless remote for the camera and don’t have someone to hold the button down you’re going to want to set it back one stop. Bulb mode on our cameras doesn’t activate with one press and deactivate with a second press. The shutter stays open as long as you have your finger on the shutter release button. So one step back is 30 seconds. 30 Seconds should be enough to do what you need, if not you’re going to need someone to help you do your project.
secondly. To adjust the aperture on the D40, look on the top right side of the camera there is a button with a +/- on it. Hold this down and spin the dial on the back of the camera. You have to hold the button down to adjust it, you can’t simply press it then spin the dial.
So that’s pretty much it, everything else is as David says. If you have 12-18 dollars lying around the house, I suggest you get the wireless remote for the camera. It’s very small about the size of two sections of a single finger and works around the camera. Behind the camera you have to be fairly close to use it, but in front of the camera you can be about 16ft away before it doesn’t work. It’s a cheap accessory that seriously cuts out motion blur with long exposures. Motion blur is what you’re going for here, so that’s not really the point. Here the remote ML-L3, would allow you set the camera up on bulb. You press the remote button – it opens the shutters. You then proceed to do your light dance. You press it again (within 15min it turns off after 15min to save battery power) and it closes the shutter.
Like David said, you’re going to have to some experimenting, you may find that a long exposure with a certain aperture setting just doesn’t work well together. There is a pretty fine dance between the two.
