Auto vs. manual: Is manual always better?
I understand needing the flexibility of manual mode for certain images, but should your camera always be set to manual?
I did an experiment: It was a simple portrait of my hubby. One was shot in Auto, one was shot using my manual settings. I spent a good 5 minutes tweaking my manual settings til I found the sweet spot. In the end, the Auto image turned out better.
With the technology of today’s cameras, is Auto really such a bad thing??? What do you think?
I’ll admit that I’m not a professional but I know enough to be able to produce a quality image in manual mode, but with things like face detection technology, auto focus, auto white balance, etc, sometimes Auto mode is a whole lot quicker and easier and will usually produce an image that is equal to or better than a shot I’ve produced myself. Just wondering what others think….
As D L said, there are thousands of reasons as to why learning how to operate a camera manually is better for the image. I do not think I have ever taken a shot on my SLR’s in anything other than AV/TV or M modes, I have never even selected the Green Box mode, P mode or any of the scene modes.
I like to have full control over the final image, I can promise you that there is a huge difference between what the camera can produce and you can produce with skill and practice.
It is like always driving a car that has an automatic gear box and never learning in a car that has a gear stick. OK the automatic will get you around and you can still drive, but you never get a full feeling of being in total control of the car and it is not the same driving experience. Some would say that it is just a lazy way of driving.
By always sticking to the Auto modes and never learning about Aperture/Shutter Speeds/ISO you are limiting yourself with your photography. Maybe you want to try a Medium format camera and look at buying a TLR?. No auto settings on that!, you have to set it all up yourself, the speed of the film, the aperture, the focus and the shutter speed.. And that to me is what proper photography is about.
