How to use manual flash settings?
I’ve been reading to ton on the net about this and cant wrap my head around this. I want to take pictures outside (where the subject doesnt move) and balance it with ambient light using a few off camera flashes in manual mode.
I get that you have 4 setting on your flash: distance, ISO, aperature and power. Then you have the setting on you camera: ISO, aperature and Shutter speed (which will control ambient light). Now, the settings you put in your camera (ISO and aperature) what you dial into your flash or vice versa?
Which do you figure out first?
I was going to be using these flashes off camera (on stands with umbrellas using a remote trigger). I thought it was best to use manual especially if the subject is not moving. Dial in all the settings and fire away. TTL would be good if its actually on your camera and your walking around and distance from your subject is constantly changing. From what I understand.
I’m going to get a thumb down for this.
If your flash supports some sort of TTL, why not use it. Firing a flash at full manual setting runs down the batteries quickly (and it’s so bright the subject may not like it if it’s a human.)
To answer your question. You dial the flash first. Whatever it gives you, then you dial it in the camera.
p.s. thank goodness for E-TTL (Evaluative-Through The Lens).
