Mom dropped my Nikon D40… AF problems… Please Help!?
So, recently, my nikon d40 was sitting on a table where it usually is, and my mom accidentally pushed it off and it fell straight down (About 2 feet) and it fell flat on the bottom. I thought nothing was wrong with it, it took photos still, etc. But about an hour later, I was taking pictures, and it froze.It would not autofocus, I turned on manual focus, and the focus ring was locked. Pressing the shudder button did nothing. I stopped taking photos, and about an hour later I put in a new battery and then it worked. BUT NOW, the autofocus is making a rubbing sound and taking forever to focus. Then, I decided to take a peek in the lens. I took it off the camera and jiggled it a bit, and it sounds like there is a piece of somthing moving around free in the lens. I am not sure if this is fixable, and if not, how do I ask my mom to replace it? I don’t want to sound rude, but I saved for months for this… 
The D40 doesn’t have an auto-focus motor, so this is a lens issue. The fall likely damaged the gears used to drive the lens, hence the rubbing noise you hear. You could bring it for repair, some shops will give a free estimate on the repair costs. It could be that the cost would not be worth repairing the lens and a replacement lens is probably the better solution.
