Olympus 5000 P&S better images than Nikon DSLR?
Trying to get past the hype–my first digital camera was an Olympus 5000 P&S, and although the pixel dimensions are smaller, in trying to be objective about the results, the Olympus seems to have been sharper for the most part than my Nikon d40. It seems the DSLR advantage in terms of IMAGE (not features) is that it has greater ppi. The Olympus maximum was 144 I believe; for the web, it was great. Is the difference going to be mainly in the printing?
Larger pixels will always give you more light ot each pixel. More light to each pixel will give you better geometric accuracy, better tonal range, better dynamic range more accurate colors and less noise. The olympus 5000 has a 1/2.33″ sensor or 6.13 x 4.60 mm The D40 an APSc that is 23.7 x 15.5 mm mm so we are not talking about two sensors that are close in size
That said a bigger sensor does not give you better shots if you do not know how to set exposure and there are other variables such as settings for saturation and vibrance that can affect outcome on the picture.
