Can someone explain the trajectory of the satellites of Sirius?
I see this picture http://site.peopleswireless.biz/images/sirius_xm_orbits.gif and I am confused. The way we are going round in route 8. Satellites must not go around the Earth in a straight line (like the rings of Saturn?) I'm thinking it seems odd, because the point of view of the image stands in comparison with the land. Can anyone find an animated display of the satellites if the "camera" is stopped and the Earth is spinning too?
In fact thousands of satellites use this type of orbit. It is called "Tundra" or "Molniya" orbit. I could not get the animated graphics that describes this type of orbit, but this site offers a lot information on it and the associated parameters. Note that this is the orbital path of satellites at 30 000 km and about 300 miles.
