What pros/cons for a non SLR to a SLR digital camera?
I heard that going for a good non SLR digital camera has benefits over an SLR version.
I’ve been looking at the Canon Powershot S5 IS in particular compared to the nearest equivalent SLR version.
What are the pros and cons for both?
I’m moving up from a cheap Vivitar 3.3 mega pix ‘point and shoot’ with x3 zoom with video, which I find rather rubbish for sharpness etc… I think my first ever childhood Kodak instamatic took and my Time UFO shaped web-cam and a 4x zoom 1.something meg pix phone camera take way more focused pics than the Vivtar has ever done. anyway
Please answer in simple beginner terminology, as not up with tech terms to well as yet, although not new to photography.

The compact digital S5 IS has about the same size sensor as most of the new SLR-like cameras.
True DSLR’s are as you guessed much more expensive and have many more options and features.
Back to the S5 IS
* It has a much smaller sensor, although it may have the same or similar pixel count. 1/2.5 ” CCD’s seem to becoming stardard.
* You cannot change lenses, what you get is what you got.
* You can get into a SLR-like camera for a lot less money than buying even just a DSLR body but more than a compact digital camera.
* If you look at some of the specs, you will find that a lot the companies have stared using smaller sensors even in their SLR-like cameras, so see if you can find one with the largest sensor you can.
* SLR-like camera usually have a greater optical zoom reach than compact digitals.
