Understanding Digital Slr Camera Settings

understanding digital slr camera settings
if i slow my camera shutter speed down how do i know which aperture to set it to?

hi
i am an amateur photographer recently i purchased a canon 450 d digital slr camera so i could do better photos and improve my own basic knowledge and also use the raw format. my problem is i am trying to photograph rivers and waterfalls using the raw format but i need to adjust shutter speed but i have know idea what the aperture settings should be is there a book which would be easy to understand at my level or if someone could explain it to me in a very simple way it would be greatly appreciated.
many thanks for any help
regards
maynard

You need to use the light meter thing, you should be able to see it when you look through the eye-piece it shows how much light is getting into your camera. You should try getting the pointer on the meter in the middle generally. But it depends what you want though, if it is a dark subject with a bright background and u need the detail in the dark area you might need the pointer to sit more to the right, ie letting more light in

If you want the blurry water pics first set a longer shutter speed… then u need to adjust the aperture while watching your light meter. The smaller the aperture number, the more light is let in… eg f.2 lets in more light than f.22. Aim to get the meter flashing in the middle to begin with and see how the photo turns out then experiment find out what works best.

You will need a tripod too though… Or your pics will be all shaky! and sometimes its easier to use the self timer on the camera so pushing the button doesn’t move the camera and make the pic blurry. Oh and if you find that your pictures are too overexposed you can alter the film speed (ISO). Sorry for the long reply! I’m no expert so it might not be the worlds best information but I find that it works for me! :-)
