How do I get insurance if I want to rent out my camera?
Im starting a business and one of the services id like to offer is rentals of SLRs and HD video cams. Any suggestions? I Googled “Camera rental insurance” got everything I WASN’T looking for.
You need a local, independent agent who can get you an equipment rental dealer’s policy.
I used to write this type of coverage – for high end video production equipment. Keep in mind the following:
1. It won’t cover small losses, ie, damage or theft by or from someone you rent to – it only covers LARGE losses, like a fire at your storage warehouse. If the maximum camera value is $5,000, expect your deductible to be $5,000.
2. Minimum premium for this type of thing is going to be $5,000. Paid in full, up front.
3. There will be STRICT usage and territory limitations. That means, you’ll have to talk to a local agent that knows what the heck they are doing.
This is NOT an easy line of business to write.
